Sustainable Factories
May 2024 – Sustainable Manufacturing, or Green Eco-Friendly Manufacturing, is defined as a modern approach to manufacturing that utilizes advanced technologies to increase productivity, optimize human labor, reduce cost, increase revenue, and minimize the environmental impact. Sustainable manufacturing has many benefits, including pollution reduction, resource conservation, new job creation, cost reduction, and easier compliance with laws and regulations. Sustainable manufacturing challenges include the high cost of implementation, a lack of experience, and complex supply chain changes. To address sustainable factories and manufacturing challenges, manufacturers need to explore green financing options, invest in employee training, implement sustainable sourcing policies, and collaborate effectively with suppliers. Sustainable manufacturing implementation steps involve addressing sustainability in a systematic and coordinated manner, prioritizing competitiveness and revenue over cost-cutting and efficiency, using strategic analysis to achieve compliance, integrating sustainability across all business functions, and collaborating with stakeholders. Sustainable manufacturing strategies include LED and efficient lighting, renewable energy sources, emission control systems, waste management programs, material recycling, closed-loop manufacturing (circular economy), and sustainability awareness training. Policy-wise, in 2019, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) established the Sustainable Manufacturing and Environmental Pollution (SMEP) program to promote technology-based solutions to address environmental and health issues linked to manufacturing, directly supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6, 8, 9, 11, and 12.
