Hydropower
January 2024 – Hydropower, also called hydroelectric power, is a form of renewable energy that uses the power of moving water, such as water moving through a dam, to generate electricity. It plants utilize water flowing through a pipe to turn blades in a turbine, which spins to power a generator producing electricity. There are many benefits to utilization such as revenue from electricity generation, new job opportunities, and economic growth. In addition, replacing fossil fuel power plants with hydroelectric power plants will reduce air pollution and carbon emissions mitigating climate change and accelerating the clean energy transition. In 1995, the International Hydropower Association (IHA) was established to promote sustainable hydropower utilization, which has an important role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined by the United Nations.
In this slideshow, you will learn about the definition, generation, benefits, UN policy, and global statistics of it’s production and utilization.
