Green Maritime Shipping
January 2024 – Green Maritime Shipping is the pursuit of decarbonizing the maritime industry to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. It involves clean sustainable fuels and new green technologies that regulate exhaust emissions, ballast water, scrubbing systems, and efficiency. The use of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as marine fuel cuts GHG emissions by 23% compared to fossil fuel based marine fuel. As a result, global demand for LNG powered ships is expected to grow considerably in the future to reduce emissions. A green ship is any seagoing vessel that uses clean renewable energy to reduce emissions and other pollutants. Green ship technology adopts measures to cut pollution and increase efficiency. In 2021, during the Conference of the Parties (COP26), two commitments were launched to accelerate global maritime decarbonization: just transition and the zero emissions declaration.
In this slideshow, you will learn about the definition, LNG marine fuel, green ship, UN policy, and global statistics of green maritime shipping.
