Geothermal Energy

January 2024 – Geothermal Energy is the heat energy produced in the earth’s core. It is a clean and renewable energy resource that can be harnessed for use as heat through geothermal heat pumps or as electricity through geothermal power plants. Examples of geothermal energy include volcanoes, geysers, hot springs, steam vents, and mud pots. There are many benefits to geothermal energy utilization such as revenue from electricity generation and new job opportunities. Geothermal energy use has grown as a result of increasing efforts to reduce the environmental impacts associated with fossil fuel use such as carbon emissions and climate change, and to utilize a clean renewable source of energy. In 2016, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the International Geothermal Association (IGA), developed specifications and guidelines for geothermal energy utilization worldwide.

In this slideshow, you will learn about the definition, benefits, UN policy, and global statistics of geothermal energy utilization.
