Food Waste Management
January 2024 – Food waste is the food discarded after its expiry date or due to spoilage. Food Waste Management is the process in which food waste is collected, recycled, and reused for biofuel production, animal feed, and composting. There are many benefits to an effective sustainable food waste management system including climate change mitigation, pollution reduction, food security enhancement, health and well-being improvements, and new job creation. However, there are challenges such as difficulties in measuring food waste streams, and lack of policies and standards to develop a comprehensive management system. In 1945, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) was established to coordinate efforts towards reducing global food waste and food loss.
In this slideshow, you will learn about the definition, impacts, benefits, challenges, UN policy, and global statistics of food waste management.
