Biodiversity Loss
January 2024 – Biodiversity is defined as the variety of life on earth in all its forms. It comprises the number and genetic variety of organisms, species, and biological ecosystems. It’s the reduction or extinction of species in a specific habitat resulting in global biodiversity depletion and ecosystem instability and collapse. It is caused by deforestation, habitat loss, overhunting, overfishing, urbanization, pollution, invasive species, and climate change. Effects of biodiversity loss include species extinction, ecosystem collapse, and food production decline. Biodiversity loss mitigation and prevention strategies include sustainable forestry and agriculture, reforestation, habitat restoration, invasive species control, and pollution reduction. In 2022, during the Conference of the Parties (COP15), the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) was adopted to tackle it.
In this slideshow, you will learn about the definition, causes, effects, mitigation, UN policy, and global statistics of habitat and biodiversity loss.
