Kuwait Solid Waste Data 2026

January 2026 – This slideshow presents an overview of Kuwait’s solid waste generation, wastewater production, and treatment capacity. The data highlights trends across various waste categories, including construction, household, commercial, agricultural, medical, and liquid waste, as well as wastewater management statistics. Kuwait experienced significant increases in waste generation across all major categories. The total waste generated in 2021 was approximately 14.64 million metric tons, distributed among construction, household, commercial, and agricultural waste streams. Construction Waste: Increased by 20% over recent years, with generation figures fluctuating around 9.4 to 15.9 million metric tons between 2011 and 2021. Household Waste: Nearly 2.5 times increase from 2005 to 2021, reaching about 1.98 million metric tons in 2021. Commercial Waste: Approximately a 2.6-times increase from 2007 to 2021, totaling just over 1 million metric tons. Agricultural Waste: Exhibited the highest growth rate, about a 3-fold increase over the period, reaching 467 thousand metric tons in 2021. Medical Waste: Experienced a 6-fold increase from 2009 to 2021, growing from about 1,994 kilograms to 10,751 kilograms. Liquid Waste: Contrarily, a 60% decrease in generation was observed from 2005 to 2021, with volumes dropping from around 1,082 million gallons to 459 million gallons. Wastewater generation and treatment volumes have generally increased over the decade. Data from 2016 to 2020 show raw wastewater volumes ranging from approximately 226 to 393 million cubic meters and treated wastewater volumes from 226 to 354 million cubic meters annually. Treatment plants operate below full capacity, with utilization varying from approximately 26% (Al-Khairan) to 82% (Al-Sulaybiya). The combined treatment capacity is around 1,206 thousand cubic meters per day, with actual treatment close to 900 thousand cubic meters per day. Construction waste dominates Kuwait’s solid waste profile, accounting for over three-quarters of total waste in 2021. Rapid growth in household, commercial, agricultural, and medical waste highlights increasing environmental management challenges. The decline in liquid waste generation may indicate improvements in industrial processes or data reporting changes. Wastewater treatment infrastructure capacity is substantial but is underutilized, suggesting
potential for optimization. The increase in both raw and treated wastewater volumes indicates rising demand for wastewater management services. In conclusion, Kuwait’s solid waste generation has substantially increased across all sectors over the last 15 years, with construction waste being the
most significant contributor. Wastewater production has also grown, requiring enhanced treatment capabilities. The data underscores the need for improved waste management policies and infrastructure to address the growing environmental footprint. In this slideshow, you will learn about the statistics of solid waste generation in Kuwait.
